Before Apple released the first iPad, I doubted that I’d ever want to use it as my primary reading device. There is a significant shopping difference between the two apps, though. iPad Pro. And you can customize those fonts, by choosing from six clear, crisp options. You don’t need a book light; instead, you just dial the brightness way down so that, while you can still do your reading, you’re not projecting that back-light all over the room. But what it can do is provide a very good experience for reading scientific papers and will make it easier to keep an organized lab notebook. It is much easier on the eyes for prolonged reading. You get a different mix of text options in iBooks.

And Lex... Macworld is your best source for all things Apple. Before Apple released the first iPad, I doubted that I’d ever want to use it as my primary reading device. I have tried to use other iPads in the past to read and take notes, but I always found the screen way too small. (Both apps can also load the more than 33,000 public-domain books available via Project Gutenberg——classics from Mark Twain, William Shakespeare, Charles Dickens, and many others.). Having the Notability app on my iPad revolutionized the lab notebook experience. It requires no power and will never need a recharge. You are not going to use your iPad Pro to do your heaviest scientific computing. I do, so for me the pro version with the apple pencil is completely worth it. Like the Kindle app, iBooks offers its own brightness slider. If you don't mind scrolling around the page or zooming in/out, go for the smaller size. The screen is absolutely gorgeous. Do you scribble on your papers while reading? While adjusting font size and brightness is an advantage for e-books over paper, those apps have a harder time letting you know where you are in your book.

Is paying for the pro version worth it? In fact, the biggest question now isn’t whether or not I should use the iPad to read, but which app should I use? We give you the scoop on what's new, what's best and how to make the most out of the products you love. On the other hand, one of the greatest achievements of the 12.9-inch iPad Pro is that it has finally made it worthwhile to read a paper using a tablet. That said, it does give you your choice of eleven text sizes (from even more painfully small to even more comically large). Luckily, e-books are generally cheaper than their paper counterparts, and services like Lendle.me make it easer to borrow books, too.

I can't imagine that the pro screen is going to give you that much of a better reading experience to make it worth it. (Many Amazon e-books support actual page numbers, but not all.) Boy, was I wrong. The page number at the bottom of the screen (256 of 287, for example) will change entirely if you switch to a larger font. iBooksBy contrast, iBooks focuses on page numbers, too—but what the app refers to as “pages” are strictly virtual ones. There are few downsides to e-reading apps. It's screen is much easier on my eyes then the 15 inch MBP with touch bar that I also have. I have been using the iPad for writing work for almost two years and I get asked regularly how I do it. The iPad and iPad Pro are great for many reasons, but I love them in part for helping me make paper documents and forms almost obsolete: I can't think of the last time I had to print a form and send it through the mail (or worse — fax it).
Kindle offers no such option. They were made for each other. iBooks attempts to recreate the feeling of a real book, down to the binding. The annotation software (there are several options) is top notch, highly recommend. The only other problem is that I’m spending more on books than I ever did before. Nevertheless, given that Brainwave is a science-focused column, I will review the iPad Pro not so much as an entertainment or educational device but rather as a device for academic scientists. Senior Contributor, New comments cannot be posted and votes cannot be cast. Lex uses a MacBook Pro, an iPhone 5, an iPad mini, a Kindle 3, a TiVo HD, and a treadmill desk, and loves them all. Again, the iPad Pro is not a laptop replacement. I now rarely curl up with a good book—in paper, at least. Thanks. Something to consider, especially since you can get some good deals on the used models now. There's way too much to read on the Web. To shop for Kindle books, you must use a Web browser to shop at Amazon’s Kindle Bookstore; fortunately, Mobile Safari on the iPad is great at that. However, I was never tempted to get an ipad for this purpose until the 12.9 pro came out. Press question mark to learn the rest of the keyboard shortcuts. Press J to jump to the feed. Amazon’s selection of books is far bigger than Apple’s: The Kindle bookstore offers more than 950,000 books; the iBookstore sells just 200,000.
By DUY PHAN In my experience, Kindle is an unapologetic battery guzzler, and I’m not sure why; turning off Wi-Fi seems to help.
