There is also an exhibition area introducing the history of the festival and a gift shop selling Aomori handcrafts and nebuta souvenirs. However, this caused the narrow Shinmachi Street to become overcrowded with festival participants, and the floats became unable to progress during the busiest parts of the festival. Aomori Prefecture has over 40 regional Nebuta Festivals, like the Hirosaki Neputa Festival, Goshogawara Tachineputa Festival, and more. Located in the Tsugaru region, Goshogawara City (五所川原市) is a small city to the west of Aomori and to the north of Hirosaki. Aomori is the northern most pre fecture on the main island ofJap an at northern latitude of 40.12 to 41.33 degrees. To many people, Goshogawara Tachineputa Festival’s floats are some of the most impressive. It is also believed to have a connection to neburi nagashi, a variety of traditional practices for “sweeping away sleepiness” that are meant to invigorate hardworking farmers in the hot, sluggish summer months and that are said to have provided the “Nebuta” name of the festival. The Nebuta Museum WA RASSE (ねぶたの家 ワ・ラッセ) is a stone’s throw from JR Aomori Station, and showcases Nebuta floats from previous years. At their largest, the nebuta can be up to 9 meters wide, 5 meters tall, and 7 meters across. Course for parade: Blue forest make up the story of human and apples.

Rassera Land, where the floats are stabled, is located next to the ASPM building along the waterfront, a ten minute walk from JR Aomori Station. If you cannot make it to Aomori during the festival days, fret not. The chants of “Rasse ra!” and the jumping contortions of the brightly dressed haneto dancers bring the festival to life. Aomori City may be the present-day capital of Aomori Prefecture, but before that, Hirosaki City was for a long time the cultural and economic capital of the Tsugaru region—the old name for western Aomori. It is held in Aomori city every year from August 2nd to 7th. Other than the impressive floats, another thing that will catch your eye is the energetic haneto (ハネト) dancers, who jump to the beat of the taiko drums and chant “Rassera, rassera!
