I picked this book seeing so many positive reviews, and it's status as one of the great classics, but somehow, I've started doubting this whole 'Classic' thing, seems like a gimmick. ( Log Out / I hate to appear as a philistine, but these other reviews must have been written by English literature graduates. It could have been a coincidence as I was reading this book I was continuously interrupted by the visual imageries from the film ‘Life of Pi’ which also portrays a beautiful survival journey of a boy with a hungry Bengal tiger named Richard Parker. Dull, dull, dull.

Read as an allegory it is the work of a supreme talent, in the twilight of his career, battling against age, writer’s block and an army of critics to produce one last masterpiece - which is indeed what he produced, and what the ‘Old Man’ in the book depicts. In fact The Old Man and the Sea revived Ernest Hemingway's career, which was foundering under the weight of such post-war stinkers as Across the River and into the Trees. The cover of this book is HUGELY misleading! Maybe it was relevant when it was written but those days have gone. For eighty-four straight days he hasn’t caught a fish, and is surviving only with the help of the young boy, Manolin, who once fished with him but whose parents have now insisted he go out with another luckier boat instead. The story details the depressing tale of an old fisherman, no longer in his prime and on a run of bad luck, chasing a remarkably large fish, only for it to be desecrated by sharks on the return journey. Or otherwise it has simply been dumbed down for the sake of it. It also analyses reviews to verify trustworthiness. If this is not an allegory about Hemingway’s own experience as a writer, the struggles to produce a novel, writer’s block, critical reaction, I don’t know what is. Try again.
