The mention of the pressure cooker is a sensory metaphor for the ticking of a time bomb, alluding to the motif of bombs utilised within the Batman comic books. The Laurel Prize will be awarded annually for the best collection of environmental or nature poetry. However, certain clues are given to suggest this was a suicide. The poem has a strong, consistent rhythm with eight beats in every line.

Armitage is known to have a good “ear” for consistent rhythm in his poetry. The physical description of the place is dry and dusty, reminding the reader of images of newsreel scenes of wars. Different readers may attach more or less significance to each of these themes, depending upon how they view the poem. The term “kid” suggests that Batman identifies Todd as immature.
